A New Class has Been Brewed

If you enjoy playing fantasy RPG games and have played them long enough, you are aware of something called homebrew. See, sometimes it’s fun to add things to the games you play. In many cases, game masters have created classes of their own for their players to try. One such class you can find listed on tomes across the web is the Chronicler.

I find it an excellent fit, myself.

The Chronicler is like the Bard. You can think of it as a subclass or an offshoot. Maybe it’s a bard, but instead of signing the stories, the Chronicler is writing them down to save for prosperity.

Weapons and Armor

Like the Bard, the Chronicler wears light armor. Often cloth or leather. They are not a combat-facing character, so they do not need heavy or bulky armor.

Since the Chronicler likes to avoid combat, he carries the basics. Similar to casters, they can equip a dagger, club, sling, blow gun, or a very large and heavy book, which, when swung correctly, can really knock an imp or small goblin off its feet.

Never forget that the Chronicler is always armed with their words.

Magic

The magic is in the writing and the ability to tell stories. Through their skills with words, the Chronicler may help your team by offering a distraction or obfuscating the enemy. Perhaps you will have them manipulate others into aiding you or giving you discounts on gear. Hey, most of the time the Chronicler is telling the truth; their credibility depends on it. But hey, what writer hasn’t stretched the truth?

Races

All races!

Anyone with a pen and paper can become a Chronicler. Yes, even you, zombie man, as long as you keep enough fingers on your hand to hold that feather quill. Oh, your thumb rotted off recently? So, sorry.

Backgrounds

Like the Bard, Urban Bounty Hunter is great for the fun customization. However, Couturier is great if your Chronicler is the team’s face, and added languages are equally helpful. Urchin also works for those Chroniclers who are a little more underhanded.

Who should play a Chronicler?

Are you a Game Master who has a Gamer Master?

You know what I mean. You play in two groups. One group you lead, while the other you follow. Or maybe you like to trade off GM responsibilities. Those who have been GMs long enough normally fall into one of two categories. They always want to be a GM, or they want to try something new from time to time.

If you find yourself taking a break from being a Game Master and want to play it calmly and quietly from the back row, yeah, that works too.

Hey, maybe you are the kind of gamer who wants to sit back and enjoy watching the other gamers get their game on. Or maybe all the wetworks are not your vibe. Nothing wrong if you want to be the face of the group, do the talking, draw the maps, and keep track of the events, not be elbow deep in whatever that giant slimy green thing was.

If you said, “Yes, that’s me!” then you might want to give this class a try.

The pen can be mightier than the sword, but we suggest you carry a dagger as a backup plan. You know… just in case.

Suddenly, colors braid together with a chiming rush, and everything reshapes mid-breath as if reality is being rewritten.

The world changes from the cozy Dragon’s Beard Inn to a home office in the cloudy Pacific Northwest.

Seated at his table, in front of two monitors and an aquatic ecosystem, is a man with a Sega’s Altered Beast – Rise From Your Grave t-shirt. He spins his chair around. No, that’s not Balbo, that is someone else.

Hi all, my name is Kevin James Breaux, and I play Balbo Garibaldi (and many other characters) on the Tabletop Beard blog.

Yep, I’m the voice of Balbo Garibaldi, your favorite jovial innkeeper and quest giver. But that’s not all. I have been writing a lot of what you read at Tabletop Beard since the beginning.

You might be wondering how a simple fantasy novelist like me teamed up with an amazing brand like Tabletop Beard.

I should say that it was fate!

You see, like most authors, I was out there looking for ways to make some much-needed extra gold. I found a listing on a job site (quest board) for a blog writer, and I applied. Next thing you know, I was teaming up with one of the soon-to-be Tabletop Beard brothers, Jason.

We worked on a separate project for over a year and became close friends. Jason is like family to me now. In fact, I like to tell people I’m the fourth brother at Tabletop Beard, but I also like to tell this joke…which I wrote BTW.

Hey everyone, did you know that I am not the only person with the last name of Breaux (sounds like BRO) working with Tabletop Beard? I’m not. Alex Breaux is partnered with them too.

Why Fantasy?

Well, I grew up in the 80s playing all sorts of tabletop games and role-playing games. Dungeons and Dragons, Car Wars, RISK, Conquest of the Roman Empire, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Zelda, Ultima, Baldur’s Gate, and more.

I loved all things fantasy and still do. And yes, I have watched Hawk the Slayer. (lol)

Fantasy books and art are the foundation of my author background. I wrote my first series of books in the epic fantasy genre. Since then, I have written an urban fantasy series and a standalone Viking Age dark fantasy (potential series), too.

I love fantasy! I love RPGs! I love to write!

I guess I shouted those things to the heavens enough to finally be heard. Because the brothers at Tabletop Beard believed in me and took me in right away. As a matter of fact, I have never felt so welcomed and respected before at any job or on any project.

From nearly day one, I have offered my creative help to grow this brand in many ways, but my largest contribution is my level 20 writing skills. I’ve written 98% of the blog posts.

Basically, I am the team’s resident Bard.  

Let’s be honest, if I were sitting with the Tabletop Beard brothers right now, and we were preparing for a quest, after Justin’s sword, Shane’s bow, and Jason’s axe, I would stand up and declare, “and my writing!”

Why Beard Care?

Because of the community. Anyone can make anything. But when you make something to support a community that you are a part of and do so to elevate everyone in that community, well, that is truly rad.

I have not always had a beard, but I have been aware of skin care for a long while because my wife is an advanced esthetician who has spent her entire life learning skin care techniques and sampling products.

When you are surrounded by things that smell good all the time, you tend to gravitate toward more good-smelling things, and the beard oils at Tabletop Beard smell outstanding.

That leads me to my big news!

Tabletop Beard decided to honor me by letting me pick a scent and create a class to represent it here in their beard care product catalogue. I named it Chronicler!

For the scent, I decided that honeysuckle should be featured. I grew up in a small town surrounded by naturally growing honeysuckles. My dad liked to call it a weed, because it was literally EVERYWHERE.

As a little kid, if you were outside, you were near the honeysuckle bushes, enjoying the scent and sampling the nectar.

My wife helped me with the finer details of the Chronicler scent. We both wanted it to be favorable to men and women. I think we did very well! Let me know what you think when you grab a bottle.

The Chronicler Class

For the class and character that would represent the new scent, I took a moment to reflect on my life as an artist and author, and it dawned on me. The Chronicler character is a great match.

The Chronicler has an insatiable thirst for knowledge. With his quill and enchanted journal, he travels the realm, chronicling the tales of heroes, villains, and everything in between. The Chronicler is always eager to learn and share his fantastic stories.

• Morrowind: Deep lore, unique setting, unmatched freedom. Exploring Vvardenfell feels truly adventurous, and the game rewards curiosity and perseverance. A challenge to survive.
• Oblivion: Balanced gameplay, lively world, memorable quests. The mix of accessibility and depth makes it a standout, and its side stories are some of the series’ best. High on fun factor.
• Skyrim: Stunning visuals, streamlined mechanics, endless replayability. It’s easy to pick up, hard to put down, and offers new surprises even after hundreds of hours. Let’s not forget that you can build and customize homes and have lots of fun companions.

Which Game Should You Play First?

If you’re looking to jump into The Elder Scrolls series today, Skyrim is the recommended starting point. Its polished mechanics, inviting world, and active modding community make it the most accessible and enjoyable for newcomers. If you fall in love with the world and want to dig deeper into lore and complexity, Oblivion and Morrowind are excellent follow-ups. Each offers a unique flavor of adventure, but Skyrim strikes the best balance for modern gamers. So, grab your sword, shout at some dragons, and let your journey begin!

Side note from the blog author:

I’ve played all of these games in both their original releases and their remastered versions. When Morrowind first came out, I promised my friends I would see the main story through to the end—but after a hundred-plus hours of wandering, I had barely touched the actual missions. I was completely absorbed by the new freedom of open-world exploration. When Oblivion was released, I put in several dozen hours and made a real effort to progress the story, but I kept running into obstacles and false starts. I never finished it back then, though I’ve since played the remastered version and am now almost at the end.

All that said, I truly connected with Skyrim. When it launched, I played straight through the main story and then completed every expansion. About a year later, I returned for another full playthrough as a different class. I’m honestly afraid to know the total number of hours I logged. I have countless fond memories—like the dragon attack during my wedding, or the serial killer who came within inches of killing my wife… inches (I saved her!). Yes, even repeatedly climbing the Seven Thousand Steps.

So, from this gamer’s perspective:

Morrowind — Hundreds of hours spent exploring, never finished the main story. I played mostly as a magic user, so I could summon ghosts and skeletons. It’s my second favorite, largely because it was my introduction to the series and to true open-world gameplay. Feels like a Dark Fantasy.

Oblivion — Roughly a hundred hours across multiple characters and restarts. I progressed the furthest as a magic user here as well, though I always carried a bow. Third favorite, though honestly, it’s nearly tied for second.

Skyrim — The hours played here easily exceed the combined total of the other two games. My favorite character was an archer/thief, and I loved every moment of sneaking across the land and through towns. (I eventually had to dismiss Lydia—she was about as stealthy as a drunk ogre. Miss you, Lydia. You fought vampires and bears like a champ.) My clear favorite. I might play it again soon!

Emerging during a golden era of Saturday morning cartoons, Visionaries combined science fiction, fantasy, and adventure in a way that set it apart from its contemporaries. Though its original run was brief, the show left a permanent mark on fans and continues to inspire nostalgia today.

The Origins of Visionaries

Visionaries debuted in 1987 as a collaboration between Sunbow Productions and Hasbro, best known for franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe. The series was conceived as both a promotional vehicle for Hasbro’s new toy line and a unique narrative experience. With only 13 episodes, Visionaries (sadly) didn’t enjoy the longevity of other cartoon classics, but its ambitious world-building and memorable characters ensured lasting appeal.

The Magical World of Prysmos

Set on the distant planet of Prysmos, Visionaries takes viewers to a world where technology has mysteriously ceased to function, plunging civilization into chaos. In the aftermath, magic resurfaces as the dominant force, and two rival factions emerge: the heroic Spectral Knights and the villainous Darkling Lords. Each group vies for power and survival, harnessing mystical powers granted by the wizard Merklynn. BTW – Nice beard, Merklynn!

Characters and Their Powers

The characters of Visionaries are defined by the unique magical abilities bestowed upon them.
